The value chain analysis of potential upland crops helps in the evaluation of the suitability of alternative crops. This analysis also highlights existing markets and crop diversification options that farmers and traders in the MRD are familiar with. Household surveys, farmer interviews and additional knowledge from local traders and companies is being used to create these value chain analyses.  

The identification and understanding of the roles of women and men in farming systems helps implement successful adoption strategies. The study of households, ethnic groups and gender roles plays an important role in identifying suitable crop and management options that could be implemented in the Mekong River Delta. The gender studies team works closely with farmers, women union groups, as well as FOCUS staff to optimise research opportunities. 

The identification of existing markets and governance components through case studies of successful operating companies and key informant interviews with a range of agribusiness stakeholders helps demonstrate market opportunities for alternative crops. This can also be used in the development of policies for adaptive transformation of alternative crops in the Mekong River Delta.
